Constitution Candidate Questionnaire

We The Vetted publishes a free Illinois voter guide that scores candidates on the Constitution — the Second Amendment first, plus First, Fourth, and Fifth Amendment rights. Below are short explanations followed by a clear statement of our position on each. For every one, simply tell us how much you agree with the statement — and add comments if you'd like. Your answers help inform our guide.

1

PICA — the “Assault Weapons” Ban & Registry

The Protect Illinois Communities Act (PICA), passed in 2023, bans the sale of many common semi-automatic rifles and standard-capacity magazines, and requires people who already own them to register them with the state.

Our position

I support fully repealing PICA — including its ban on so-called “assault weapons” and standard-capacity magazines — and I oppose any firearm or magazine registration.

2

FOID Card Repeal

Illinois requires a Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card — a state-issued permit you must apply and pay for before you can legally own a firearm or buy ammunition.

Our position

I support repealing or dismantling the FOID card system, so law-abiding residents don’t need a government permit to exercise their Second Amendment rights.

3

Red Flag Laws (Firearm Restraining Orders)

“Red flag” laws (Firearms Restraining Orders) let a court order a person’s firearms be confiscated — sometimes before that person has had a chance to defend themselves in a hearing.

Our position

I oppose expanding red-flag / Firearms Restraining Order laws, and I support strong due-process protections before anyone’s firearms can be taken.

4

SAFE-T Act & Criminal-Justice Fallout

The SAFE-T Act overhauled Illinois criminal justice, including ending cash bail. Many gun owners are concerned it weakens consequences for violent and armed criminals.

Our position

I support restoring real consequences for violent and armed offenders, and fixing the parts of the SAFE-T Act that put dangerous criminals back on the street.

5

Concealed & Constitutional Carry

Illinois requires a permit, training, and fees to carry a concealed firearm. “Constitutional carry” would let law-abiding adults carry without first getting a state permit.

Our position

I support expanding the right to carry — including constitutional (permitless) carry for law-abiding adults.

6

Magazine Capacity Limits

Under PICA, Illinois caps how many rounds a magazine can hold — currently 10 rounds for rifles and 15 for handguns.

Our position

I oppose magazine-capacity limits, and I support repealing the current caps.

7

Carry Restrictions & “Sensitive Places”

Even with a valid carry license, Illinois law bans carrying in a long and growing list of “sensitive places,” which critics say makes a license nearly useless in daily life.

Our position

I oppose the sweeping “sensitive place” and gun-free-zone restrictions that make a concealed-carry license nearly impossible to actually use.

8

FFL, Dealer & Manufacturer Regulation

Illinois gun shops, gunsmiths, and manufacturers face state licensing, taxes, insurance mandates, and liability laws that can force small businesses to close.

Our position

I support Illinois’ firearm dealers, gunsmiths, and manufacturers, and I oppose new licensing, taxes, insurance mandates, and liability laws designed to put them out of business.

9

Ammunition Taxes & Registration

Proposals in Illinois and elsewhere would tax ammunition, require serial numbers on individual rounds, or log ammunition buyers in a government database.

Our position

I oppose new taxes on ammunition, ammunition serialization, and any point-of-sale registration of ammunition buyers.

10

Waiting Periods & Purchase Limits

Illinois imposes a 72-hour waiting period on firearm purchases. Some proposals would add “one gun a month” or other limits on how and when you can buy.

Our position

I oppose waiting periods, “one gun a month” rules, and other mandates that delay or limit lawful firearm purchases.

11

Free Speech & Anti-Censorship

The First Amendment protects the right to speak, publish, and dissent. A growing concern is government pressure on social-media and payment companies to silence lawful speech it disfavors.

Our position

I will defend free speech, and I oppose any government effort to pressure platforms, banks, or employers into silencing lawful political or personal expression.

12

Religious Liberty & Conscience

The First Amendment protects the free exercise of religion — the right to live and work according to one’s faith and conscience without government coercion.

Our position

I will protect the free exercise of religion and conscience rights, and I oppose government mandates that force people to violate their sincerely held beliefs.

13

Privacy & Warrantless Surveillance

The Fourth Amendment guards against unreasonable searches. Modern concerns include warrantless digital surveillance, license-plate readers, and government purchase of citizens’ location and financial data.

Our position

I oppose warrantless government surveillance and mass data collection on law-abiding citizens, and I support requiring a proper warrant before the government searches your data or property.

14

Due Process & Civil Asset Forfeiture

The Fifth Amendment protects against being deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process. Civil asset forfeiture lets the government seize cash and property without ever convicting the owner of a crime.

Our position

I support strong due-process protections and oppose civil asset forfeiture that lets the government take property without a criminal conviction.

Constitutional Fidelity & Oath of Office

Every officeholder swears an oath to support the Constitution. This measures whether a candidate treats that oath as a real limit on government power — not a formality.

Our position

I treat my oath to the Constitution as binding, and I will vote against legislation that plainly violates constitutional limits — even when it is popular.
